Ray was born in Pittsburgh October 13, 1926. He's been with Dizzy Gillespie, headed his own trio, accompanied Ella Fitzgerald, and has been with the Oscar Peterson Trio since 1951. With Oscar, Ray has contributed one of his most impressive qualities to the unique fusion this trio sustains -- the quality of being able to give to a group, to become more of an indivisual by making possible a more indivisual unit. In this respect too, Ray, Shelly and Barney are similer. All three are superior soloists, and all three are superior, ungrudging section men and accompanists. |
