1930年10月31日 Texas 州 Dallas から75号線沿いに北上した Oklahoma 州境の 街 Denison に生まれる。70年8月31日NYで癌のため死去。ハイ・スクール時代 からトロンボーンを始める。49〜53年の空軍バンド在籍中にテナー・サックスに 転向。54年バークリーに学び、55年にはアーニー・フィールズ率いるR&Bバンドで プロ・デビューを果たす。58年にNYに進出、ホレス・パーラン(p)を通してチャー ルズ・ミンガスに出会い、59〜63年、ミンガス・バンドで活動を行う。なおその間、 初リーダー作の（ベツレヘム）吹き込み、自己バンドの結成も行った（60年）。 64年にはランディ・ウェストンのバンドにも参加している。
