1928年10月10日イリノイ州イバンストン生れ。8歳でピアノを弾き始め、当初は Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines をアイドルとしたが、ブギウギ・ ピアノの影響を受け、やがてArt Tatum, Bud Powell, Oscer Peterson を愛する ようになった。長じてシカゴのルーズベルト大で音楽を学び、40年代後期から Gene Ammons, Lestor Young らと共演。1951〜53年の兵役中に Adderley兄弟と 知り合って、除隊後、Dinah Washington の伴奏者を経て第1期Adderley combo のピアニストになった(56年2月〜57年11月)。その後 Gillespie combo に 迎えられて58年3月から59年9月まで同コンボで活躍、その間に吹き込んだ "Junior" によって一躍脚光を浴びる。退団後、Eddy Davis = Johnny Griffin Quintet に 暫く席を置いて、60年12月に独立。以来トリオを組んで今日に至る。
