人気、実力ともにJジャズ若手のトップを独走する女流ピアニスト。1967年4月16日、京都に生れ、東京で育つ。都立国立高校卒業後、バークリー音楽院留学のため渡米。在学中にスライド・ハンプトン・バンドでプロ・デビュー。89年同校を首席で卒業。その後ジェシー・デイビス、グレッグ・オズビー（as）らのバンドで活動しNYで注目を集める。92年には帰国。向井滋春(tb)グループや自己のトリオで活躍する。翌93年に初リーダー作「WOW」がスイング・ジャーナル選定《ゴールド・ディスク》、ジャズ・ディスク大賞《日本ジャズ賞》を獲得。その後もジャズ界の話題をさらうベストセラー作を次々とリリースし続けている（94年「ビレッジ・バンガードの大西順子」：同《銀賞》、96年「プレイ・ピアノ・プレイ」：同《日本ジャズ賞》）。
