Biography

拙サイトで始めてのジャズ・オルガンのアーティクルとなった Jimmy Smith は 1928年(25年、30年説もあり)12月8日 Pennsylvania 州 Norristown 生れ。 Blue Note では未発表ものを合わせると、40タイトルを越える作品を残した彼だ が、Verve 移籍後もその勢いは衰えず、精力的な活動を続けた。ジャズ批評 No.105《特集ジャズ・オルガン》によると、当時のオルガンを志す若者から見れ ば Wild Bill Davis (1918.11.24 - 95.8.17) 等が人生訓を問うような校長先生で、 Jimmy Smith は担任の先生のような、一挙一動を見逃せない存在だったとある。 確かに、初期の特徴であるモコモコ・サウンドから繰り出されるアドリブには惹 かれるものがあるようだ。The Sermon をはじめとするジャム・セッション・シ リーズは Lee Morgan が参加しているため蟹座の宇宙人好みだが、Smith のプレ イはというとダラーッと伸びたゴムひもの感が否めない。
