サラ・ヴォーン

24年ニュージャージー州ニューアーク生まれのサラ(Sarah Vaughan)は、1940年代(45年?)にソロ歌手としてデビュー。1947年に"It's Magic"が初めてのヒット曲となり、大型新人として注目を集めた。47年〜51年までダウンビート誌の女性歌手部門で1位の座をキープ。歌手でトランペッターのビリー・エクスタインに影響を受け、当時最先端のモダン・ジャズであったビバップのスタイルを歌唱に活かした、モダン・ジャズ・シンガーの先駆者である。

年代別に彼女の代表作を追っていくと、49年〜53年のCBS時代には、マイルス・ディヴィスとのセッションを含む「イン・ハイファイ」や、ベスト盤ともいえる「アフター・アワーズ」が一押し。また54年〜59年にはポピュラー傾向のあるものをマーキュリー・レコードに、ジャズ方面ではそのサブ・レーベルエマーシー・レコードに膨大な数の録音を残し全盛期を迎える。この頃の代表作は「ウィズ・クリフォード・ブラウン」、カウント・ベイシー・オーケストラと共演した「ノー・カウント・サラ」などが素晴らしい。そして70年代の作品においては、中野サンプラザでのライヴ盤「ライヴ・イン・ジャパン」が群を抜いている。78年にはパブロに移って82年の「クレイジー・アンド・ミックスト・アップ」が注目作。ここでは超スタンダードの「枯葉」を、彼女らしいニュアンスでユニークに歌いあげる。90年に物故。(Wikipedia)。

サラのようにキャリアが長く、常に第一線の歌手である場合、「彼女の最高傑作」という賛辞は、やや軽率のそしりを免れないであろうか、とは油井先生の言葉。確かにそのとおりで、50年代の彼女の代表作といえば同じように謗られそうだ。単にブラウニーが参加しているだけとは、思わない・・・。

今宵はサラ。彼女はマーキュリー時代に多くのレコーディングを残していますが、その中でも「ウィズ・C・ブラウン」の次に人気の高いのが本作と云う賛辞は軽率のそしりを免れないでしょうか。本作ではブラウニーの参加はないのですが、末尾のパーソネル欄にカッコ書きで夫々の生年〜没年を付記しました。いずれもバップ・ムーブメントの中で活躍した世代です。ヴォーカルのサラも例外ではなく、そういった彼らの影響を受けたのでしょうか、ビ・バップのスタイルを歌唱に生かしていった先駆者的な存在と言われています。タイトルのハイファイ(Hi-Fi)は、hi-fidelityの略で高忠実度の略、この時代にはよく使われた言葉ですが、現在では死語になっています。(2011/09/14 20:49)

Crazy and Mixed Up

ハイライトは冒頭にも記したように、"Autumn Leaves"。おなじみのシャンソンであるが、ジャズでもスタンダードとなっているこの曲を、スキャットの土台として取り上げている。歌詞も歌わない、メロディも歌わずにスキャットで聴かせる。手に汗握るスリリングなスキャットに脱帽ものだ。この曲を聞き比べて、最後に到達するのがサラの"Autumn Leaves"ではないかと思っている方も多い。
