ウィントン・マルサリスが1991年に発表した、「ソウル・ジェスチャーズ・イン・サザン・ブルー」3部作の第2集。「アップタウン・ルーラー」とは、ウィントンの故郷ニューオリンズに古くから伝わる神話のヒーローで、ルーラーは信仰心の篤い人や高度な言説、知的な探求に携わっている人は勿論のこと、幅広い人々の間でも文句なしに信奉されている。このアルバムに収録された曲はいずれもアップタウン・ルーラーの多様な性格のある一面を讃えている。1曲目の＜サーム26（詩篇26番）＞はルーラーのスピリチュアルな哲学をズバリ表現したような賛美歌で、「ソウルの意味とは、スピリチュアルなものだ」という、ルーラーの教えを噛み砕いた内容になっている。そして、ルーラーのモットーや祈り、戦いなどを描き、＜サーム26＞を奏して終える。重要な意義を持つものはすべて、始まったときと同じ終わり方をする。それは、スピリチュアルなエッセンスに還る、ということでもある。

ウィントン・マルサリスが1991年に発表した、「ソウル・ジェスチャーズ・イン・サザン・ブルー」3部作の第3集。「レヴィー・ロウ・モーン」（岸辺の低い呻き）と題されたこのアルバムは、ソウルと楽器のコントロール能力と、インスピレーションの背丈に見合った澄明さで演奏された、インストゥルメンタル版ブルースである。このアルバムで展開されているのは、コンテンポラリーなブルース・ビートを探求する作業の最終段階であるが、そのビートとは、ムードであり、フィーリングであり、スピリットの置かれた状況であり、多様性トコミュニティに対する支持の表明である。こうして＜ブルース・サイクル＞の第3作において、この3部作全体を通じて強力に推進している＜ジャズの根本＞にいよいよ迫りつつ、前進していくのである。3部作を締めくくる圧倒的完結編。
