デヴィッド・マシューズ

マンハッタン・ジャズ・クインテット（Manhattan Jazz Quintet）とは、アメリカ合衆国のジャズ・バンド。デヴィッド・マシューズ（ピアノ）を中心に結成され、1984年にデビュー。元々は『スイングジャーナル』誌とキングレコードの発案によるプロジェクトで、その後も日本向けの活動を中心としている。1984年、デビュー作『マンハッタン・ジャズ・クインテット』発表。日本で大ヒットし、現在までに累計20万枚を売り上げた。当時のメンバーはデヴィッド・マシューズ（ピアノ）、ルー・ソロフ（トランペット）、ジョージ・ヤング（テナー・サックス）、チャーネット・モフェット（ベース）、スティーヴ・ガッド（ドラム）。3作目『マイ・ファニー・バレンタイン』（1986年）より、ベーシストがエディ・ゴメス（元ビル・エヴァンス・トリオ）に交替。1988年にはエディとスティーヴが脱退し、チック・コリアのリズム隊を務めていたジョン・パティトゥッチ（ベース）とデイヴ・ウェックル（ドラム）が加入。しかし、翌年にはジョンとデイヴがチック・コリアとの活動で多忙になったため脱退し、初代ベーシストのチャーネット・モフェットが復帰。ドラマーの方はスティーヴ・ガッドの復帰、ピーター・アースキンの一時的な参加を経てビクター・ルイスが加入。

My Funny Valentine (MJQ 3rd, 1985)

MJQ3作目はエディ・ゴメスがベースに加わり、スティーヴ・ガッドとは共演も多いので相性も良く、ベテランの技を見せつけてくれます。いわゆるデジタル・リズム・セクション。選曲がなかなか。ビリー・ジョエルの曲（5曲目）もあり、ニュー・スタンダードの走りか。オリジナル曲は1曲（6曲目）。ジョン・コルトレーン作の、あの『ジャイアント･ステップス』に収録され、初っ端なにエディー･ゴメスのソロ。ベース･ソロのストリート･パンチ。続いて、ジョージ･ヤングの都会的なカッコイイソロ、続いて、ルー･ソルフのハイ･ノートを織り交ぜながらの燃えるような気合の入ったソロ、最後はガッドのカウベルと三連殴打のフュージョン･ソロ。よりシャープな感じになったアップテンポでバリバリ攻める1曲目。

タイトルどおり都会の夜をややスローな渋めの4ビートを奏でる2曲目、セロニアス･モンクの曲。1944年の初録音だが、やはり、マイルスやビル･エヴァンスの演奏がピンとくる。このチューンは淡々としすぎるぐらいのリズム･キープ。そんな中でもジョージ･ヤングのソロとビッド･マシューズ、エディー･ゴメスの情感のこもったプレイが良い。

明るくてメロディアス、ややアップテンポでノリ良く、時に暴れまわる3曲目、1965年のブロード･ウェイからの曲で、バートン･レーンとアラン･ジェイの作曲。原曲は分からないが、リズミカルで明るく仕上げている。ジョージ･ヤングのソロが華やかで、デビッド･マシューズのソロがスウィング感に溢れている。

ベースとサックスからアップテンポでキメもありカッコ良くはじまる4曲目、原曲は1937年のミュージカルから。チェット･ベーカーやマイルスのスロー･テンポのイメージがあるが、このアレンジは全く違って、歌詞の意味すら無視しているようなミディアム･アップ･テンポでプレイされている。しっとりとメロディが語りかけてくる穏やかなバラードの5曲目、、ビリー･ジョエルの邦題『ニューヨークの想い』をジャズ･フレーバーに仕上げている。デビッド･マシューズのアレンジの巧みとルー･ソルフのミュートによるソウル･フルなソロ、ジョージ･ヤングのソロが醸し出す新しいニューヨーク賛歌。エディー･ゴメスの糸を引くようなベース･ランニングが心地良い。華やかで現代的なサウンドのブルースでせまってくる直球の6曲目。デビッド･マシューズのビバップ･ブルース。ルー･ソルフとジョージ･ヤングが変幻自在にフレーズを決めてプレイしている。2人はご機嫌にブローしまくっている。最後は、エディー･ゴメスのソロで締めくくる。

The Sidewinder (MJQ 5th, 1986)

THE SIDEWINDER is the Manhattan Jazz Quintet's fifth aJbum since the band's inception in mid-1984, all for King Records (there's a bestseHing video, taped live in Japan, as well). The group's previous studio date, MY FUNNY VALENTINE, was voted 1986 Album of the Year by the readers of SWING JOURNAL. The Manhattan Jazz Quintet, or MJQ, is arguablythe most popular jazz combo in Japan today.
Comprised of top New York jazz musicians such as trumpeter Lew Soloff, tenor saxophonist George Young, pianist David Matthews, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Steve Gadd, the MJQ success apparently has made bebop fashionable agaln.
1986 was a triumphant year for the band in many ways. Besides topping the polls, the group went on their first-ever tour of Japan, playlng in sold-out concert halls and clubs before enthusiastic audlences. During this tour they taped the video and a two-record "live" album recorded at the Japanese equivalent of the Village Vanguard. The Pit lnn. The live recordings show an MJQ at a new height of interactive creativlty.
"Playing thatt our helped us a lot in terms of each of us understanding the other guy's playing," says MJQ leader/arranger/pianist David Matthews. "That experience made our playing on THE SIDEWINDER that much better. Some of thetunes on this album sound Like a Live performance. There's something about the way we played together on that Japan tour that rubbed off on us and showed in the music we recorded here."
As is always the case for every MJQ album, program on THE SIDEWlNDER is a mix of classic jazz tunes from the 50's and 60's as welt as origlnals.
The album opens up with a rouslng "Big Apple Jam," an uptempo romp through some friendly changes. "A real fasttune should have melodic material that starts it off and gives the guys something - a set of chords, a feeling, a rhythm, whatever - to fire their imaglnation for their improvisation," says Matthews.
"Django," was written by John Lewis and originaHy performed by the ORIGlNAL MJQ - the Modern Jazz Quartet. This interpretation is quite different from any you've heard. lt's certainly the FUNKIEST. George Young's solo gets down'n dirty from the start to set the tone.
Eddie Gomez is the star of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," handling the melody with aplomb, creating a state-of-the-art bass solo afterward. "l thought this would be a perfect vehicle for Eddie Gomez," remarks Davld. "In fact, there is more variety of texture and sound on this MJQ record than any other. Each tune has a distinctly different character."
"The Sidewinder," was written and recorded by Lee Morgan on the memorable BLue Note album of the same name. Released in the mid-sixties, the album was an unexpected hlt, a best-seHer that actuaHy placed in the Top loo pop sales charts! This version keeps the sassy feel of the orlglnal while giving it an 80's refinishing. Undoubtedly the funkiest tune yet recorded by the band, "The Sidewinder" came across so weH thatonlyone takewas needed. This could well become a theme song for the MJQ.
Due to the Manhattan Jazz Quintet's popularity in Japan, their music was added to a movie soundtrack. David wrote "Bed Time Eyes" as the love theme for the movie of the same name.
BEDTIME EYES (to be released in 1987) takes place in Japan, and is about the relationship between a BLack Amerlcan sailor and a Japanese glrL who is trylng to be a jazz singer. There's no hope for the romance from the beginning but she loves him desperately right up to the movie's tragic ending.
"I tried to capture that tragic element in the melody of "Bed Time Eyes," says Matthews. "After reading the script I tried to write a ballad which expressed the feeling, the emotion, between the two main characters." The result is one of the pianist's best compositions, and it's given a heartfelt performance by the band.
Besides several versions of the "Bed Time Eyes" theme, the movie soundtrack features another performance by the band, "Love For Sale," the final track on this album. Several other Matthews tunes we also used, including "Ballad" from his BLLLY BOY trio recording, and "La Tigra" from DAVID MAITHEWS AND THE FIRST CALLS.
THE SIDEWINDER is the best Manhattan Jazz Quintet album to date. The ensemble playing, the solojng, the accompaniment are the best they've ever been in this band. 'The group is really maturing," says David. "We're really getting comfortable with each other and that shows in the music. Playing good melodies and exciting solos is what it's all about."

My Favorite Things-Live In Tokyo (MJQ 6th, 1987)

中野サンプラザでのライヴ。オリジナルは3曲（2、4-5曲目）。スタンダードの3曲は以前のスタジオ録音盤の再演。ライヴのほうが迫力があっていい感じ。エディ・ゴメスとスティーヴ・ガッドは、このアルバムでいったんMJQを離れます。ラテン的というかファンク的というか、それでいて静かな場面もあって起伏のある名曲のタイトル曲の1曲目、4ビートというかシャッフルというか、ブルース的でもあるダイナミックな2曲目、前作でも取り上げられていたせいか基本的な部分は近い、アップテンポで力のある3曲目、やはりアップテンポで哀愁ラテンのメロディ、時に4ビートでせまる4曲目、超アップテンポでたたみかけるように突き進んでいく迫力ものの3分ほどの5曲目、ほんの少しゆったりめで渋いボッサを聴かせてくれる6曲目。（ジャズCDの個人ページ）

Manteca (MJQ 11th, 1992)

MJQは日本企画のバンドだったのですが、これは本国アメリカでのライヴ録音。やはりライヴならではの臨場感。ピーター・アースキンのドラムでもライヴだと熱くなる印象。オリジナル曲は2曲（4-5曲目）。迫力のあるノリの良いラテン・リズムと4ビートで明るいサウンドでせまってくるタイトル曲の1曲目、クリフォード・ブラウン作のテーマがラテン、アドリブがラテンと4ビートで熱いソロが展開している2曲目、ハイスピードでドラムスとサックスのデュオからテーマになだれ込んでソロの戦いがはじまる３曲目、優しいメロディのテーマでミディアムの4ビートがさらに温かみを添えている4曲目、アップテンポのボッサでマイナー系のメロディが印象的な5曲目、やはり長調の温かい4ビートでソロを奔放に遊んでいるという感じの6曲目。（ジャズCDの個人ページ）

Take The A Train (MJQ, 2004)

スピーディでカッコ良い展開の1曲目「ザ・テーマ」のみデヴィッド・マシューズ作で、他はスタンダード、ポップスかジャズメン・オリジナル。相変わらずシャープなアレンジ、分かりやすいテーマとポップ性があります。原曲のやや気だるい雰囲気をうまくつかんだ2曲目、ホーンのユニゾンのテーマと意表をついたアレンジで特急列車のようなタイトル曲の3曲目、ビートルズの曲をうまくミディアムの4ビートにしたなかなか雰囲気のある4曲目、静かにしっとりゆったりと奏で上げていくバラードの5曲目、アール・クルー作のゴキゲンなメロディとリズムのラテンナンバーの6曲目、いかにも「ベサメ・ムーチョ」らしくベタな感じが逆にいい感じの7曲目、ファーストアルバムの１曲目と同じ曲を演奏して、やはり時代と成長を感じる8曲目。（04/9/22発売）
