クリフォード・ブラウン

1956年6月26日早朝、ペンシルバニア州で1つの交通事故が起こった。雨上がりのターンパイクturnpike(*1)を走っていた1台の自動車が運転を誤り、脇の土手に激突したのである。車は大破し、乗っていた3人は全員死亡した。バド・パウエルの実弟リッチーとその妻、そしてクリフォード・ブラウンの3人は、その前夜 フィラデルフィアで行われた地元ミュージッシャンとのジャムセッションのあとシカゴに行きマックス・ローチと落ち合う予定を立てていた。55年にチャーリー・パーカーを失ったジャズ界は、またしても歴史に残る天才トランペッターを、それも25歳の若さで失うのである。

クリフォード・ブラウン（Clifford Brown、1930年10月30日 - 1956年6月26日）は、アメリカ合衆国のジャズミュージシャン（トランペット奏者）。ハード・バップ期初期の卓越したプレイヤーであり、ドラマーのマックス・ローチとのバンド活動は高く評価され、「ブラウニー」の愛称で親しまれている。その艶やかな音色からファッツ・ナバロの再来とも呼ばれた。

デラウェア州ウィルミントン生まれ。父が持っていたトランペットに興味を示し、12歳の頃から吹き始める。1948年、デラウェア州立大数学専攻入学、1949年、メリーランド州立大音楽科専攻転校。学生バンドなどで演奏活動をしていた頃、ディジー・ガレスピーに出会い、本格的にジャズ・ミュージシャンを目指すようになる。フィラデルフィアを拠点に活動していた頃、チャーリー・パーカーと共演。チャーリーはクリフォードの演奏に感銘を受け、アート・ブレイキーにクリフォードを推薦した。1953年、タッド・ダメロン楽団に参加。同年、J・J・ジョンソンと共演。同年、アート・ブレイキーのサポートを得て、初のリーダー・セッションを行う。同年、ライオネル・ハンプトン楽団のヨーロッパ・ツアーに参加。

1954年2月21日、ニューヨークのジャズ・クラブ「バードランド」で、アート・ブレイキーを中心に行われた歴史的セッションに参加。この模様は『バードランドの夜』というタイトルでレコード化された。同年、マックス・ローチとともにクリフォード・ブラウン=マックス・ローチ・クインテット結成。1955年11月には、ソニー・ロリンズがメンバーとして加わる。1956年6月26日、リッチー・パウエル（バド・パウエルの弟）の妻、ナンシーの運転する車にリッチーと共に便乗してフィラデルフィアからシカゴに向かう途中、ペンシルベニア・ターンパイクで交通事故死。25歳。事故当夜は雨が降っており、ナンシーを含めて3人全員がこの事故で亡くなった。（Wikipedia）
