ポール・チェンバース

ポール・チェンバース（Paul Laurence Dunbar Chambers, Jr., 1935年4月22日 - 1969年1月4日）は、1950年代から1960年代にかけて活躍した、ジャズ・ベーシスト。1954年に単身ニューヨークへ行き、ジョージ・ウォーリントンのバンドに加入。その後、マイルス・デイヴィスのレギュラー・バンドに移る。1962年のバンドの解散後は、ウィントン・ケリーと約3年間活動し、その後はフリーとなる。

お休みの日の昼下がり、ポール・チェンパース名義のゴーを聴きながら記している。アメリカの古い信号機の青ランプが表示されているタイトル通りのジャケットだが、表題曲はアルバムの中には存在しない。6曲のうち半分はチェンバースのオリジナル。Ａ面最初のトラックは、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズのドラム・ロールで始まる"Awful mean"、キャノンボールが、途中ダブルカウントのリズムになったりしてイケイケ・ムードで快調に飛ばす。また、この時期のウィントン・ケリーが演奏が、素晴らしい。締めくくりはチェンバースのアルコ・ソロだが、これはいただけない。2曲目のスタンダード・ナンバー、"Just friends"は、Sam M.Lewisが詩を書き、ドイツ生まれのJohn Klennerが曲をつけた1931年の作品。もはや二人は恋人ではない、ただの友達なのだ。恋は終わってしまったという失恋のバラードだが、この時期のインストもののジャズでは快調に飛ばす。このトラックでも例外ではなく、最初のユニゾン・コーラスが終わるとフレディ･ハバード、ウィントン・ケリー、キャノンボール、そしてチェンバース（ここでもアルコ・ソル）の順に2コーラスずつアドリブが続いていく。最後は、再びチェンバースのオリジナル"Julie Ann"で3拍子で変化をつける。あっという間のA面である。(2009/02/28 14:25)
